The scriptural heart of our vision for Family Life is Deuteronomy 6, which tells us to “impress these truths [God’s commands] on our children as we rise up, go along the way and lie down.” The ultimate goal of Family Life Night (FLN) is to see families growing closer to God and each other in such a way that results in God’s name being magnified.
FLN classes are offered on Wednesday night each week from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the RCC Education Building and the Winter 2010 semester started on January 13th. Available courses, facilitators, room numbers, and descriptions are further below. You can register here online.
We also offer exciting programs for kids fourth grade through eighth grade – Area 56 & Uprising 78. Facilitator(s): Craig and Joni Keller
Room: C109/110
Cost: $10 for small group participant guide
Finally, some sensible advice and caring encouragement on raising boys—from the nation’s most trusted parenting authority, Dr. James Dobson.
With so much confusion about the role of men in our society, it’s no wonder so many parents and teachers are at a loss about how to bring up boys. Our culture has vilified masculinity and, as a result, boys are suffering.
Parents, teachers, and others involved in shaping the character of boys have many questions:
• Are boys fundamentally different from girls?
• What role does competition play in a boy’s development?
• What is a father’s unique contribution to parenting a son?
• What about a mom’s role?
• How can grandparents contribute to raising a healthy grandson?
• What’s the best way to educate boys?
• What advice is available for single parents of sons?
• What causes homosexuality? Can it be prevented?
• What should we be doing to shape the next generation of men?
In Bringing Up Boys, Dr. James Dobson tackles these questions and offers advice and encouragement based on a firm foundation of biblical principles.
Parents will benefit from Dr. Dobson’s decades of expertise as he share the secrets of raising boys and answers important questions in this lively, relevant, and life-changing presentation from Focus on the Family®. The DVD Series and accompanying workbook will equip parents with the practical understanding, dynamic biblical principles, and encouragement they need to steer the boys they care about toward confident, responsible manhood.

The DNA of Relationships – Dr. Gary Smalley Series
Facilitator(s): Keith and Shawn Johnson/Rick and Sharon Shafer
Room: C103
Cost: $10 for the small group study guide
Have you ever felt as if you’re REPEATING THE SAME MISTAKES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS?
Dr. Gary Smalley tells you the whys and hows of relationships. He illustrates the DNA of relationships, showing how each one of us is uniquely designed for healthy relationships with friends, family, and coworkers. You don’t have to live with dysfunctional relationships anymore!
Understanding how you are designed will start you on a journey to healthy and enjoyable relationships. The following topics will be covered in this course:
- Discovering the DNA of Love: There are three key choices that bring you complete satisfaction in life. You’ll understand how to balance God’s DNA of love by loving God and others as yourself. Also, find out how God created men and women different and how to use these differences to create great relationships.
- The Power of One: You are not a victim in the world of relationships! Nothing or no one can take away your joy in life. Learn the four ways you can positively impact all your most important relationships.
- Create a Safe Place for Love: Learn four ways to create a safe place for others where love can flourish. When two people feel safe in one another’s presence, they naturally open up to each other and love flows from openness.
- Eliminate the #1 Cause of Relational Conflict: Without realizing it, when conflict comes between two people, they are both allowing each other to push an internal “hot button.” Discover your core button and why that affects everything you do!
- God’s Fuel for Your Soul: God wants you to be satisfied so that you can become a channel of His love to others. Too many broken relationships are directly linked to our inability to find God’s fuel for our soul. As we take love ourselves, we can then love others.
- Create Harmony through Communication: Connect to the heart of another person by learning how to successfully communicate. When you understand how someone feels, the other person let’s you connect in a way that makes everyday conversation come alive

Married with Children
Facilitator(s): Scott and Jenny Treadway
Room: C102
Cost: None at this time.
For many parents, children quickly become the first priority. These little ”blessings” that depend on us for everything from food to clothing to love can demand almost all of our energy and attention. Still, it is extremely important after having children to make sure that your marriage comes first.
If your marriage is not strong, your children will be able to feel it. If husband and wife are constantly arguing and bickering, and seldom or never affectionate, children will learn to behave this way when they grow up. Children have an amazing ability to sense when things are wrong. It is important that you demonstrate the ability to work through problems together to your children. In addition, if you are not both on the same page as parents, your parenting can become contradictory and confusing for your children.
Putting your marriage first insures that your needs are being met. When you are on an airplane, the airline attendants always tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself before putting it on your children, so that you are stable enough to help them. It is the same way with marriage. By keeping your marriage strong, you keep yourself strong and much better able to care for your children.
By putting your marriage first, you not only help your spouse, you help your children.

Family Ministry for Teens
Facilitator(s): Mike Johnson/Don and Karen Liversage
Room: F202
Cost: $15 for the course workbook(s)
Parenting teenagers is challenging and rewarding. Many parents believe the problem is the teenager. In this class we will approach this topic by discussing what is missing in much of our “solutions” today and exploring Gods’ intention for the family.
Our approach will be to look at what the scripture envisions for family life and how it relates to the local church – a “Family of Families.” We will discover how belonging to a Family of Families, and raising our children together (resisting the temptation to either ignore or hyper focus on the teen) can be the most amazing journey and learning experience of our lives.
